Fred,
I would proposed that your logic is correct in understanding the problem, but off base in your conclusion.
You correctly rule out the absurd notion that "once there was nothing, and it become something" which is the basis for Darwinian evolution and uniformitarianism... not mention it "allows" men to deny the that God exists. In essence, the UNIVERSE becomes God.
But I would contend that is makes PERFECT sense that God created "something from nothing". Why?
Because to say that "something" besides God has existed eternally, promotes "something" to equality with God because "something" would have to be self-sustaining, UNcreated and eternal. To think that a non-personal "something" besides Almighty God fits that description, is not logical, nor Biblical.
We are correct in saying "something cannot come from nothing". To believe otherwise is simply to suspend reality for our own bias. Something cannot come from nothing WITHOUT THERE BEING SOMEONE CAPABLE OF DOING IT.
In reality, "something" did NOT come from "nothing". "Something" was created by God where previously "nothing" existed. If God is eternal, self-existing and uncreated, then we have our FIRST CAUSE answer. God is the "something" that has always existed.
Then the question remains "is God capable of creating something that previously did not exist?" Of course the answer to that is an easy, resounding YES!
Don't confuse "yes" with our ability to comprehend it. After all, God created US when we did not previously exist. So to say that something is impossible ("God created something that previously did not exist") simply because WE (who are created by same God we are trying to comprehend) do not understand it, is the pinnacle of "illogical".
Even without Scripture, the unescapable conclusion is that "something" at one time did not exist or "something" becomes "self existing and self sustaining" thus making "something" God.
God is the First Cause. God did indeed create "something from nothing" in one sense. In another, God created "something from something" because God is the Something that existed first and all things were created out of Him.
